This post signals a new direction of my blog. Instead of just posting about my colors or attire, I want to start explaining the more intricate details of planning my wedding. In my experience thus far, I've gained the most value in blogs like weddingbee where the various brides discuss other prevalent issues like careers & money. My other favorite planning resource has undoubtedly been the Knot bios. I've added links to my favorite bios on the main page. The level of detail that goes into these bios is incredibly helpful in creating my own vision.
So, the first thing I want to discuss is my crazy fiancee. Is yours crazy? I've definitely been the "primary" planner of the wedding, and thus I've entered into "wedding world." You know the place, where "chiavari" becomes part of your vocabulary and you learn how to spell ranunculus? Well, whenever I have to approach Matthew for input there is always a scuffle. It's not a major one, but there's always a moment where Matthew's eyes grow really wide and his nostrils flair at the price quote.
Our first major scuffle: the DIY DJ. After I told him how much a DJ costs, Matthew insisted on being the DJ himself. Yes, I know you're all laughing now, but I'm totally serious. This is the kind of thing I have to deal with. It's been a hard battle, but tonight Matthew agreed to hire one. I won. Yeah!

I have been planning on my own since we got engaged, I am a little worried I will be dealing with groomzilla when he gets back. I'm not sure what to expect, but luckily I have pretty much everything done. And thank God we are not paying for anything or else I would have felt the wrath all the way from Iraq!
I am so excited about the new direction. It is so easy to talk about pretty things and fabulous ideas when you are already married as so many of us "bridal bloggers" are. We speak from experience, which is valuable, but sometimes experience can become colored, shall we say, a rosy shade of pink. All we remember is how wonderfully everything turned out and how great a party it was, we seem to have forgotten about the late nights and long discussions (arguments) about napkin folds and ink colors. We no longer have to take into consideration anyone else's feelings but our own and we no longer have to make sure to get approval before making decisions. But you, and so many other readers do.(By the way, when he mentions in passing that he thought "___ would maybe be kind of cool for the wedding", read it as "I really want this and if we do not have it I will remind you of it for the rest of our marriage!")
You my dear have a different perspective. You see the planning for what it truly is. You see the process in its raw form. The arguments that ensue, the feelings that get hurt, the feeling that there is not one single thing on the face of this earth that could possibly be more important than the decision to use satin or grosgrain ribbons.
Your candid observations and honesty about your experiences will be far more valuable to brides than my thoughts on whether to use standard or flourished calligraphy when addressing your envelopes.
You will both love and hate the process as I am sure you have already done. At the end of it all it is about the vows, the ceremony, and the commitment. The rest is just a crazy journey that gets us to that point.
I look forward to reading about your adventure. And, yes, my husband was absolutely ridiculous for the 11 months we were engaged. Who knew it mattered so much what song was being played between the first and second courses? Solution-give him the few things he wants, trust me (except for being the DJ at his own wedding, that definitely gets denied!), it makes for a better story and a happy marriage.
Faithfully reading throughout this process,
Mimi
